What Is TR90 in Glasses Frames? Material Claims Explained

Understand what TR90 means in eyewear listings, what resin-maker information can verify, and what buyers still need to confirm for a finished frame.

TR90 is a material label used in glasses-frame listings, but the label alone does not identify every part of a finished frame. EMS-GRIVORY publishes information on its Grilamid TR 90 transparent polyamide for optical applications. A seller calling a frame “TR90” has not, by that label alone, proved which exact resin, grade or components were used.

This is a buyer’s explanation of the term, not a statement that Titanium Frames currently offers a TR90 product line. Our published catalog categories are titanium, metal and acetate.

What does the resin-maker source establish?

EMS-GRIVORY describes Grilamid TR as a family of transparent polyamides and names Grilamid TR 90 in its optics materials. Its technical brochure lists multiple grades with different material data and applications. Those are data for identified resins under specified test conditions, not test results for an eyewear frame made by an unrelated seller.

In a product listing, “TR90” may be used as a general marketing shorthand. Do not assume the listing proves a resin manufacturer’s identity, grade, supplier relationship or guaranteed finished-frame performance. Ask the seller for the selected model’s material declaration and supporting documentation if that level of specificity matters to your purchase.

TR90 is not a complete construction description

A frame can combine a polymer front with metal temples, different hinges and other hardware. The front might be identified as TR90 while the rest of the product uses other materials. A clear purchasing description names the components separately.

An injection-molded design also has geometry choices: rim thickness, bridge shape, temple section and how the hinge is attached. These affect fit, appearance and how a sample should be evaluated. The material label cannot substitute for the model drawing or a complete physical sample.

Not every “plastic” frame is TR90. Sheet cellulose acetate and cellulose acetate propionate are different material routes. Eastman’s eyewear overview explicitly distinguishes sheet-acetate work from injection-molded frame approaches. Our acetate frame guide explains the sheet-based route in more detail.

What claims should buyers question?

Words such as “unbreakable,” “hypoallergenic” or “memory” need a defined claim, test and exact product scope. A raw-material brochure does not prove those claims for the assembled frame, which includes hardware and may have a coating or other components.

The same caution applies to weight. A material data sheet can report resin density; it cannot tell you the weight of a finished frame in a particular size. Request the assembled sample weight and state whether lenses are included.

For any skin-contact or market-compliance claim, ask for evidence for the relevant finished model. Do not assume a polymer front establishes the composition of metal hinges or decorative pieces. Our nickel-free eyewear guide explains the difference between ingredient and finished-product claims.

How to source a TR90-labeled frame

  1. Name the model and intended use. Request the exact catalog reference, size, colors and current availability.
  2. Map the components. Ask which parts use the claimed resin and what materials make up hinges, temples and trims.
  3. Clarify the grade claim. If the quote names a resin brand or grade, request documentation connecting it to the selected production model.
  4. Define sample checks. Inspect fit, lens retention approach, hinge operation, finish and relevant finished-product requirements.
  5. Separate order routes. An existing style, private-label change and newly developed shape can have different sample and quantity conditions.

Our plastic-frame supplier comparison shows how different sellers describe TR90 and other injection-frame offers. It is a sourcing reference, not proof that all listed sellers use one resin or meet one quality level.

Frequently asked questions

Is TR90 the same as acetate?

No. Grilamid TR 90 is identified by its producer as a transparent polyamide. Cellulose acetate is a different material, often supplied as sheet for optical-frame fronts and temples. Compare the exact product specifications rather than a broad “plastic” label.

Does “TR90” prove a frame is flexible or unbreakable?

No. Complete-frame behavior depends on resin, geometry, hardware and test conditions. Request a sample and a stated acceptance method for any performance claim.

Can Titanium Frames quote a TR90 model from this article?

This article is educational; it does not add a TR90 model to our published catalog. If you are evaluating a mixed-material or new-design project, send the specification for feasibility review without assuming acceptance or availability.
